Can You Recover Crypto Sent to the Wrong Withdrawal Address?

· About 9 min · CoinWiki Editorial

Sending crypto to the wrong address is one of the most anxiety-inducing experiences in the crypto world. Whether recovery is possible depends on the type and severity of the mistake.

If you encounter this issue, immediately log into the Binance official site and contact customer support. If you don't have a computer nearby, download the APK and use the app on your phone.

Scenario 1: Sent to Someone Else's Valid Address

Recovery likelihood: Very low

If you entered a real, existing address and the crypto was successfully sent there, then technically only the holder of that address can access the funds.

Blockchain transactions are irreversible by design. No centralized authority can reverse a confirmed on-chain transaction. Unless you can contact the address holder and they're willing to return it, the funds are very difficult to recover.

If the address belongs to an exchange: Contact that exchange's customer support with your transaction details and identity information. Some exchanges may help contact the other user, but it depends on their policy and success isn't guaranteed.

Scenario 2: Wrong Network but Compatible Address Format

Recovery likelihood: Relatively high

This is one of the most common mistakes. For example, you intended to deposit to an ERC20 address but selected BEP20 when withdrawing. Since Ethereum and BSC use the same address format (both start with 0x), the crypto was actually sent to the same address on the BSC network.

If the target address is your own:

  • Major exchanges like Binance typically support multiple EVM-compatible chains, so your funds may have already arrived under the corresponding network.
  • Check the balance under the relevant network on the Binance deposit page.

If the target address belongs to an exchange:

  • Contact that exchange's customer support and explain the network mistake.
  • Provide the transaction hash and correct network information.
  • Most exchanges can help you recover the funds, though they may charge a fee.
  • Processing time can range from a few days to a few weeks.

Scenario 3: Extra or Missing Characters in the Address

Recovery likelihood: High (funds may not be at risk)

Blockchain addresses have a checksum mechanism. If you randomly modify characters in an address, it will most likely become an invalid address. The exchange will validate the address format during withdrawal, and an invalid address simply can't be submitted.

If the withdrawal failed due to an invalid address, your funds are still in your exchange account -- nothing to worry about.

Scenario 4: Sent to a Completely Incompatible Chain

Recovery likelihood: Very low

For example, sending ERC20 USDT to a Bitcoin address or a Solana address. Since the underlying blockchains are entirely different and address formats are incompatible, most exchanges will reject such withdrawal requests.

If somehow the transaction went through, the funds are most likely permanently lost.

Pre-Withdrawal Safety Checklist

To prevent costly mistakes, check the following before every withdrawal:

  1. Verify the address: After pasting, check at least the first 4 and last 4 characters.
  2. Confirm the network: The sending and receiving networks must be exactly the same.
  3. Test with a small amount: For first-time transfers to a new address, send a small test transaction first.
  4. Use the address book: Save frequently used withdrawal addresses in Binance's address book to avoid manual entry every time.
  5. Enable the whitelist feature: Turn on withdrawal address whitelisting so you can only withdraw to saved addresses.

How to Contact Binance Support

If you've sent to the wrong address, follow these steps:

  1. Log into Binance and go to the Support Center.
  2. Select "Withdrawal" as the issue category.
  3. Provide complete details: transaction hash (TxID), withdrawal coin, selected network, amount sent, and the correct target address.
  4. Describe the error and submit the ticket.
  5. Wait patiently for a response -- don't submit duplicate tickets.

Sending to the wrong withdrawal address can be an extremely expensive mistake. Building the habit of double-checking is far more reliable than trying to recover funds after the fact.
