Binance P2P claims zero fees, but have you noticed that the price of USDT on P2P is always slightly higher than the international exchange rate? Does this spread count as a hidden cost?

The Spread Is Real
Suppose the current USD/CNY exchange rate is 7.25, but P2P merchant selling prices for USDT are typically in the 7.30-7.40 range. That 0.05 to 0.15 difference is the extra cost you're paying.
Buying 1,000 USDT should cost 7,250 CNY at the exchange rate, but on P2P you might actually pay 7,350 CNY β an extra 100 CNY. Although this 100 CNY isn't labeled as a "fee," it is definitely part of your transaction cost.
Why the Spread Exists
First, merchants need profit. P2P merchants earn money from the buy-sell spread β they buy USDT at lower prices and sell at higher ones.
Second, compliance costs. Merchants bear the risk of having their bank accounts flagged, and this risk premium shows up in their quotes.
Third, supply and demand. When buying demand exceeds selling supply, prices naturally rise. During bull markets, spreads tend to be wider.
Is This a Hidden Fee?
Strictly speaking, this isn't a fee charged by Binance β it's a result of market pricing. But in terms of your actual spending, the effect is the same: you pay more money for the same amount of USDT.
So the answer is: while it's not technically a fee, it is definitely part of your transaction cost.
How to Reduce P2P Spread Costs
First, compare quotes from multiple merchants. Prices can differ by 0.05-0.1 CNY between merchants β choose the cheapest one.
Second, opt for larger transactions. Some merchants offer better rates for large orders.
Third, watch the timing. P2P prices on weekday daytime hours tend to be closer to market rates, as merchant activity and competition are higher.
Fourth, try placing your own order. You can post a buy ad on P2P, set a price you're willing to pay, and wait for merchants to fill it. The wait may be longer, but the price might be better.
Fifth, explore other deposit channels. Credit card purchases, third-party payments, etc. β compare the overall costs.
It Works in Reverse When Selling
When you sell USDT for CNY, P2P buying prices are typically below market rates. You pay more when buying and receive less when selling β the round-trip spread can reach 1%-3%.
Understanding this cost structure helps you approach P2P trading more rationally and choose the best method for depositing and withdrawing funds.
